Being from the west coast, the racism in the South seemed like a very odd and foreign idea -- I judged it, looked down on it and couldn't grasp the 'why' of it. But now that I'm in North Carolina and see more of the social interaction between different groups, I think I understand more clearly by blacks and whites don't like each other very much and it's very simple, to me at least: the worst possible representation of whites (white trash shit-kickers with Confederate flags on their pick-ups) and blacks (the chip-on-the-shoulder-having, blame the white man for everything, use race as an excuse to not better oneself types) live here together and it's no wonder they hate each other. If I find them detestible, then naturally they would find each other detestible. It's easy for them to pinpoint these individuals and use the colour of their skin as the reason for finding them repugnant. If you're one of these types of people, you're probably not accustomed to seeing beyond the surface of things anyway.
Now, that said. I need to clear my name before I get a bunch of hate responses. It's not a race thing for me. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian or other -- if you lack class and are contributing to the decay of our society, then you're worthless and it has nothing to do with what you look like. I despise people equally regardless of their racial, ethnic or national background. I guess the South just has more of those types than I am used to. I may sound elitist and I'm sure people might take issue with some of the stuff I'm saying, but I'm being honest about what I see and what I think the problems might be. But then again, I was brought up in a city with a lot of ideas and surrounded by a great diversity of people and had access to a lot of resources that these people may not have ever had. But at a certain point, ignorance becomes a choice. It's just a shame that so many people in the South, in the North, in the Midwest, everywhere, in other countries, make that choice. That's the thing I take the most issue with. The choice to not better oneself and to use one's race, one's hometown, one's upbringing as an excuse. Ok, that's my bit. Cuss me out if you want to, but I will stand my ground.
